The 12 Professional Teaching Competencies are competencies that you must fulfill as a teacher. In my own words, I quickly explain what each competency means.
Competency #1: To act as a professional inheritor, critic and interpreter of knowledge or culture when teaching students.
As a teacher, to me this competency means that I am responsible for the cultural and knowledge approach of my classroom. I need to be professional in my approach and respect everyone’s culture and knowledge. It is my own job to make sure that my level of knowledge is sufficient to teach with different students from different cultures. Moreover, I need to set benchmarks for my discipline level, taking into account everyone’s point of view, in order to facilitate the students’ development and understanding. In others words, I need to accept the different cultures and form a common approach with the school’s orientation. This will allow student to clearly understand what is expected from them according to the school and cultural thoughts. For instance, if I have several students from a different religion in my classroom, I will modify my basic approach in order to fit and accept their cultural approach. However, I will stick in major part to the school’s thoughts and goals and keep a certain level of authority over the students. I also want to be able to create relationship between different students of different cultures. This is why I will also pick team and ask students to work cooperatively with everyone, which will generate critical and new approaches for the students.
Competency #2: To communicate clearly in the language of instruction, both orally and in writing, using correct grammar, in various contexts related to teaching.
As a teacher, to me this competency means that I must be able to communicate both orally and in writing in a clear way. Moreover, I must be able to use correct grammar in every communication. Personally, I understand that I must be able to write and talk with ease while using an appropriate level of grammar. I must also be a model for students when speaking and writing, which means that I must use appropriate vocabulary and correct my and the students’ mistakes when they occur. Furthermore, I must be able to take position on a subject and argue for my point of view. Finally, I must improve my communication skills continuously. To achieve such results, I would prepare my cues and explanations in advance, to make sure that they will be appropriate to the students’ level and respect the grammar rules. Moreover, I would also take time to correct students’ homework and verify accurately for mistakes. Finally, I would prepare myself carefully before class time in order to make sure to use the right word for equipment, rules and explanations. I want children to develop the right vocabulary for each sport, so I need to look for it on my own as well.
Competency #3: To develop teaching/learning situations that are appropriate to the students concerned and the subject content with a view to developing the competencies targeted in the programs of study.
As a teacher, to me this competency means that I must develop child-centered learning situations for the students, so they can acquire new knowledge and develop new skills, based on the programs of study. The competency #3 represents the ability to work efficiently with the Progression of Learning (POL) document. With the POL document, you can create appropriate learning situations for your students taking into account the logic of the content and the development of learning. You need to target several elements in the POL which children must learn according to the program of study. For instance, I would prepare plans according to which elements of the POL document I am targeting. To generate these plans, I would first pick elements form the POL and create activities that can respond to every element I want to work on. The goal to perform in this competency is really to carefully plan in advance, respecting the POL document and the goal of the program.
Competency #4: To pilot teaching/learning situations that are appropriate to the students concerned and to the subject content with a view to developing the competencies targeted in the programs of study.
As a teacher, to me this competency means that I must support and encourage students in their learning situations. There are several ways to support and encourage students in their learning, such as asking questions to students to make sure they integrate the learning information. Moreover, you can provide the appropriate resources to students and encourages teamwork. This competency is working concretely with competency #3, which is to develop learning situations. The goal of this actual competency is to pilot the learning situations in order to create the greatest learning conditions for your students. For instance, you need to move around your gym during class and constantly give cues to the students. You can also adjust the activities, making it harder or easier, so the children are successful and learn more quickly.
Competency #5: To evaluate student progress in learning the subject content and mastering the related competencies.
As a teacher, to me this competency means that I must gather information about students’ progress and be able to evaluate their potential. You need to develop efficient assessment tools to evaluate the progression of your students. These tools can be useful, because you need to keep a mark of the progression on your students if you want to be able to evaluate the real progress they are making. Before assessing anyone, you must also inform the students and the parents about your expected outcomes and evaluation process. Then, the students will know how they are going to be evaluated. As a teacher, you can continuously keep notes about students’ progression. This will allows you to keep tract of everyone’s learning and progression through the year. Moreover, you can design a specific way to inform your students of their grades, strengths and weaknesses. For instance, take one student away from the group during class hour to discuss about his grades and what he/she could/should improve.
Competency #6: To plan, organize and supervise a class in such a way as to promote students' learning and social development.
As a teacher, to me this competency means that I must organize my class in order to keep control over the children. The goal is to develop a great discipline system where every student is involved in the smooth running of the classroom. To achieve this goal, you must explain what the appropriate and expected behaviour is. Routines, rules and signals are useful elements to use to obtain a regular running of the classroom. It is easier to achieve the smooth running of the classroom with known routines and written rules. This is the kind of document I would create and use in my own classroom. Moreover, you need to prepare plans for those students who will be off-task and that show inappropriate behaviour. For instance, use time-out system for students who are not demonstrating the wanted behaviour.
Competency #7: To adapt his or her teaching to the needs and characteristics of students with learning disabilities, social maladjustments or handicaps.
As a teacher, to me this competency means that I must plan my classroom in such a way that it is also accessible for people with learning disabilities, social maladjustments or handicaps. You want to make it as easy as possible for these people to access your classroom and participate in physical education. You need to plan adapted and appropriate activities that match the skills and abilities of these people. As a teacher, you are not alone to perform in this competency. It is good to consult parents and specialized educators as a main resource, in order to obtain information on the student’s needs, progress, disabilities, etc. Then, planning is going to get much easier as you know what is needed for this special student. On my own, I would prepare a lot of progressions that could fit everyone, even the students with learning disabilities. That way, each student can be successful and progress at his own rhythm.
Competency #8: To integrate information and communications technologies (ICT) in the preparation and delivery of teaching/learning activities and for instructional management and professional development purposes.
As a teacher, to me this competency means that I must use information and communications technologies (ICT) through the teaching and learning process of my physical education classroom. Before using ICT, you need to question yourself about the benefits and limitations it has toward the learning content and the students’ development. It is not always useful to present a video or to enhance your classroom with a power point presentation. Sometimes, it is better to go with a simple oral presentation and simply use posters. However, information and communications technologies can be a useful tool to present video about the upcoming sport you will play or to present any form of motivational video. This is the principal utilization I think of when I want to integrate ICT to physical education. Moreover, you need to help students familiarizes with the utilization of ICT, so they can develop a critical judgment regarding the information they find on the Internet and on their own thoughts.
Competency #9: To cooperate with school staff, parents, partners in the community and students in pursuing the educational objectives of the school.
As a teacher, to me this competency means that I must coordinates my actions with parents and school staff in order to achieve and attain the educational objectives of the school. The goal is to work cooperatively with everyone to enhance the learning process of the students. A good way to work cooperatively is to invite parents and students to become actively involved in the school’s projects and activities. It is easier when more people are involved, as we can take benefit of everyone’s strengths. It is also really important to know and respect your role in various contexts. Personally, I would clearly define my role as a physical education teacher and I would regularly invite parents to volunteer for the upcoming activities.
Competency #10: To cooperate with members of the teaching team in carrying out tasks involving the development and evaluation of the competencies targeted in the programs of study, taking into account the students concerned.
As a teacher, to me this competency means that I must discuss with other teacher following and evaluating the same group of students that I teach, in order to build an effective teaching team system. Cooperation is not always necessary in a team teaching system, but most of the time, it is really useful. You can easily recognize what are the needs of the development and evaluation link to the competencies and then develop specific objectives. On my own, I would develop a team teaching system mainly when a group or an individual is presenting some kind of delay in his/her development. I could work cooperatively with the other teachers working with that student or group and build objectives and alternatives solutions to enhance his/her learning.
Competency #11: To engage in professional development individually and with others.
As a teacher, to me this competency means that I must identify available resources to enhance my own teaching skills. The goal is to identify your strengths and weaknesses, so you can work on them. You can also discuss with your colleagues to identify any available resource and develop your teaching skills. Personally, I prefer to reflect on my own teaching and make adjustments rather than asking to my colleagues. I would record myself teaching and then look at which elements I could improve. This way, I will really recognize my strengths and weaknesses and be able to find the right solution on my own.
Competency #12: To demonstrate ethical and responsible professional behaviour in the performance of his or her duties.
As a teacher, to me this competency means that I must represent a role model for children and provide the best learning environment to all the students. In order to be a role model, you need to act as a professional and manage your classroom and students perfectly. You need to think before doing anything, as it will have a direct impact on children’s behaviours. You must respect confidentiality, respect every student, avoid discrimination, demonstrate sound judgment, etc. The goal is really to create the best learning environment for your students, in which they will be able to perform without any disturbing factor. In order to perform at this competency, I would apply several techniques from the Graham book, such as positive reinforcement, motivational technique, discipline system, routines and rules, signals and optimism.
