FROZEN TAG

CATEGORY: POURSUIT AND EVADE

SOURCE: M. GORDON OLIVER

GRADE LEVEL: K-8

ACTIVITY LEVEL: HIGH

EQUIPMENT: COLORED BASES OR HOOP

FUNDAMENTAL TECHNIQUES:

-LOCOMOTOR

-NON-LOCOMOTOR

-STABILITY

PROGRESSIONS OF LEARNING:

-COMPETENCY 1: Balanced stances (postures) on the floor and on apparatus/ moving about an area with and without obstacles/ rotations on the spot and on apparatus

-COMPETENCY 2: Opposition movements or actions in duelling activities in a common space

TACTICS:

-OFFENSE: Try to tag the other players

-DEFENSE: Avoid the other players and avoid being tagged

FORMATION: Every player is both an attacker and a defender. All the students go wherever they want in the playing area before the game start. The end lines are determined before the game begins.

DESCRIPTION OF PLAY:

-Once every player is in the playing area, the teacher ask them to maintain a balance posture (different at each game) to let him know that you are in a ready position.

-Because everyone is an attacker and a defender, once you are touched, you stay where you are and maintain that balance posture showed at the beginning.

-To get back on the play, someone needs to free you by touching your hand and saying "you are free, you are free, you are free". Then you can start to play again.

-If 2 players touch themselves at the same time, both are freeze and must adopt that balance posture.

-If a player is not free by the other players, after 30 seconds he can restart the play

-LAYER 1: Basic movement pattern and move safely in the space

-LAYER 2: Play the game with the basic rules

-LAYER 3: Add a rule: Keeping the balance posture is considered as a safe zone

-LAYER 4: Only few area are marked by colored bases where you can maintain a balance posture

-LAYER 5: Play the doctor mode, where players can be touch 3 times before they are eliminated. Once touched, you need to put your hand where you’ve been touched as if you were covering your injury.

MODIFICATIONS:

-Change the balance posture at each game

-Choose 1 or 2 players that can’t be freeze during a couple of seconds (immunity)

-Auto-defrost rules if performing around 10 jumping jack

SAFETY:

-Students should keep eyes up when moving in the space

-Soft tags when touching someone else

-End lines away from the walls
